Public Procurement Insights from Mike Derr

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the monthly Executive Interview Series. Throughout the year we’ll interview industry leaders and innovators to glean their insights into facility management and construction procurement trends, best practices and success. We’re kicking off the Executive Interview Series with Mike Derr, Contracts Purchasing Officer for Monterey County, California. Mike sits on the National Procurement Institute Board of Directors as the Vice President, and will be incoming President in October of 2018.

In this video Mike will discuss his extensive background in public procurement, how to overcome challenges and a few of the key best practices Monterey County is implementing to meet the needs of their residents.

Monterey County is located on the Central Coast of California just south of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the third largest agricultural county in California, covering 3,350 square miles with a total population of over 500,000 residents. The public works construction needs of this county are vast, and their procurement department is tasked with finding the most efficient and cost-effective means of spending taxpayer dollars to meet the needs of their community.

Monterey County has partnered with Gordian to implement their Job Order Contracting (JOC) program to streamline the construction procurement process, saving the county both time and money. View the additional resources to explore construction procurement tips and best practices.
