George Mason University (GMU) relies on RSMeans data for updated cost information to estimate and budget for their regular maintenance and repair projects, as well as major maintenance planning initiatives, like replacing chiller and boiler systems. GMU receives approximately $3-4M in state funding and uses RSMeans data to validate project budgets when developing their 5-year capital plan. GMU has a CMMS system implemented for tracking and managing maintenance activities, but they use their published RSMeans estimating data to validate maintenance budgets that the system generates based on building type, square footage, and location adjustment.
One particular project that was completed using estimating cost data was a door replacement project. A student center at the University had 5 double-door entry points, for a total of 10 storefront doors. The accurate and up-to-date estimating data was crucial to developing a project estimate to replace the doors.
